3 Design Elements I Find Incredibly Chic in Any Space!

There are certain details that instantly elevate a home—no matter the size, style, or budget. They don’t scream for attention, but they quietly signal thoughtfulness, refinement, and timeless taste.

As an interior designer working with homeowners across the Chicago and suburbs, I often return to these three elements when I want a space to feel chic, layered, and intentionally designed.

These are the details that never feel trendy—and always feel expensive.

1. Fresh Flowers, Year-Round

Fresh flowers are one of the simplest ways to make a home feel lived-in, cared for, and elevated. Even the most beautifully designed space can feel flat without something organic and alive. They make a home feel welcoming and personal.

This doesn’t mean elaborate arrangements. A simple vase of tulips, branches, or greenery on a kitchen island or entry table is enough.

2. Natural Stone and Subtle Luxury Materials

Nothing replaces the depth and authenticity of natural materials. Stone instantly grounds a space and adds a sense of permanence that manufactured materials can’t replicate. Kitchen countertops or backsplashes are great place to use natural materials. Even coffee tables and decorative objects can be made of those materials.

The beauty of stone is in its imperfections—veining, texture, and variation are what make it feel high-end. Even incorporating stone in small ways creates a layered, collected look.

3. Statement Details That Feel Personal, Not Trendy

This is where personality comes in—and where homes truly stand apart.

Some of my favorite chic details include:

  • Unique lighting pieces that feel sculptural

  • Wallpaper used intentionally (powder rooms, dining rooms, ceilings)

  • Crystal or glass knobs that add subtle sparkle

These elements act like jewelry for the home. They don’t overwhelm the space—but they add interest, depth, and a sense of discovery.
